Blockchain and smart-contract development

After the recent bursts of blockchain being overhyped and overestimated as a solution for everything in the recent years, and subsequent crashes; we are arriving at an equilibrium where we realize that there are legitimate uses of blockchain for a number of cases.

There’s negative associations with blockchain for a lot of people, for a good reason. The speculative rollercoasters aside, my only problem with it is the massive waste of energy resources. Which is why I never work with so called proof of work blockchains which waste energy and burn up our climate. So I only work on proof-of-stake chains which have the energy footprint comparable to regular cloud compute.

Example use cases

For SUYE, an Amsterdam art studio, I built a platform where artists issue certificates of originality as NFTs. What they cared about wasn’t the technology. They wanted to be part of a movement where art and human originality are valued, at a time when it becomes cheap and readily available for anyone. And to be part of the future.

At Kwantor, we use the Hedera blockchain to register proof of equity in organizations that will hold up in court even regardless of Kwantor’s existence or cooperation.

Non fungible tokens: the most fungible thing there is

A non-fungible token is in fact… very fungible. And it proves a lot less than people think it does! There’s some nuances here and there but if you’re the owner of an NFT, whichever metadata connected to it can be updated by whoever controls the original contract and thus the image/media can be replaced by something else… oftentimes the token can simply be ‘burned‘ after which you’d be left with just ashes. There’s some ways to implement guardrails around this contradiction in the core premise of NFTs but a lot of projects out there are NOT built with those!

Technologies

Selected work

  • SUYE: digital certificates for physical art

I built a platform that lets SUYE and its artists issue digital certificates (NFTs) for proof of originality, with JS widgets to integrate into their existing websites.

  • Kwantor: employee participation, funding rounds

I led development of Kwantor’s participation platform from 2022. Now it runs funding rounds, and my part is the money: held until a round is funded, then released or refunded.

  • WEYU: NFT creator tool, launchpad & marketplace

I worked on WEYU’s platform in a team of about eight: a marketplace, a creator toolbox and launchpad, and Discord bots. My work started with “WEYU pieces”, a large collaborative charity project with UNHCR.

Working together

I work from Zaandam, next to Amsterdam, in the Netherlands. Tell me what you want to build, what already exists and where you are getting stuck. How I work.
